## Original article

The Professional Engineers Board welcomed 145 more Professional Engineers (PEs) between November 2016 to October 2017. This includes 47 PEs from the branch of chemical engineering introduced in January this year. The remaining 98 new PEs are from the branches of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering.

Also, a record number of 97 specialist professional engineers were registered. Of these, 95 were registered in the four new specialised branches introduced in January 2017, namely, (i) lift and escalator engineering, (ii) crane engineering, (iii) access platform engineering and (iv) pressure vessel engineering. The remaining specialist PEs were registered in geotechnical engineering.

The registration of PEs in chemical engineering, as well as that of specialist PEs in the four new specialised branches are part of PEB’s continuing efforts to deepen the expertise and capabilities of the profession and support the implementation of new regulatory requirements by government agencies. This brings the total number of registered PEs to 3,937 and specialist PEs to 220.

The newly minted PEs received their certificates from Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for National Development, at the Professional Engineers Board’s (PEB) Day of Dedication 2017 this morning.

In addition, 15 ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers (ACPEs) were also presented with certificates, and 12 Gold Medal Awards were presented to outstanding graduates of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes.

Er. Ho Siong Hin, President of PEB, said, “PEB’s mission is to safeguard the life, property, and the welfare of the public through the setting and maintaining of high standards for registering professional engineers, as well as regulating the practice of engineering. Moving forward, following the passing of amendments to the PE Act in September 2017, PEB’s role would be enhanced to include the development of professional engineering. In this regard, PEB would collaborate more closely with our partners and stakeholders to further advance and develop the profession to better meet the many challenges of the future. “

Over 250 PEs attended this morning’s ceremony and pledged to continue their service to society and commit to high standards of professional engineering practice. The Day of Dedication recognises the role and contribution of PEs in the development of Singapore’s built environment.
