## Featured rationale

The infrastructure could support sustainable urban expansion by supplying up to 85% of current recycled-water demand from non-conventional sources, potentially strengthening the Eco-city's liveability.

## AI summary

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city opened a water reclamation centre with 100,000 m3/day wastewater-treatment capacity and initial recycled-water output of 21,000 m3/day.

## Original article

The water reclamation centre in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Tianjin Binhai New Area Party Secretary Zhang Yuzhuo on 25 June 2017.

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city Water Reclamation Centre houses an advanced wastewater treatment facility with a capacity of 100,000 m3/day; and a water recycling facility that will produce 21,000 m3/day of recycled water, with future expansion capacity of 42,000 m3/day.

The wastewater treatment facility in the centre upgrades treated wastewater effluent from an existing wastewater treatment plant to meet the most stringent Chinese standards for wastewater. Part of the treated water will be discharged into nearby water bodies, with the rest further treated to produce usable recycled water. This will increase the water obtained from non-conventional water resources1 up to 85% of the current daily demand for recycled water in the Eco-city.

The Tianjin Eco-City Water Investment & Construction Co., Ltd – a joint venture between Keppel Infrastructure and Tianjin Eco-City Investment and Development Co., Ltd., built the water reclamation centre, and will operate the centre on a BOT (build-operate-transfer) basis.

Singapore has actively contributed to this project. PUB shared Singapore’s experience in used water and water recycling treatment processes, while Keppel Infrastructure supports the construction and operations of the centre by transferring both management and technology know-how gained through operating its NEWater plant in Singapore.

Annex

1: There are currently three non-conventional water sources in the Eco-city: desalinated water, recycled water and rainwater.
