Today, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Minister of State for National Development and Manpower, presented 199 new Professional Engineers (PEs) with certificates of registration at the Professional Engineers Board (PEB)’s Day of Dedication 2018. This brings the total number of registered PEs in Singapore to more than 4,000, a record for PEB. 

Er. Ho Siong Hin, President of PEB, said, “Even as Singapore faces a manpower crunch in many sectors, the number of PEs registered this year has hit a milestone of almost 200, which is double the number of PEs registered in 2016. This brings the total number of PEs in Singapore to over 4,000 for the first time, which augurs well for the profession as it signals that there is a strong and sustainable demand for professional engineering services.”

Two pioneer PEs, Er. Cham Tao Soon and Er. Tan Gee Paw, were each presented with the Distinguished Professional Engineer Award in recognition of their outstanding achievements in engineering, management, research and development and entrepreneurship, as well as their services to the engineering profession. 

In addition, 51 specialist PEs were registered in six branches of specialised professional engineering, namely, (i) lift and escalator engineering, (ii) crane engineering, (iii) access platform engineering, (iv) pressure vessel engineering, (v) geotechnical engineering, as well as (vi) protective security engineering – a new branch launched in January 2018. 

Seven ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineers (ACPEs) were also presented with certificates of registration and 12 Gold Medal Awards were presented to outstanding graduates of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes.

The Day of Dedication recognises the role and contributions of PEs in the development of Singapore’s built environment. A total of 250 PEs attended the ceremony and pledged to continue their services to society and uphold high standards of professional engineering practice.
