Hyatt to debut Alila brand in Japan with Hakone mountain retreat

Hyatt Hotels has announced an agreement with Fujita Corp to open Alila Sengokuhara Hakone — set in the district of Sengokuhara in the mountainous region of Hakone — marking the Alila brand’s first property in Japan. The property is scheduled to open in 2028.

Centred on the restorative tradition of Japanese onsens, the property offers 60 guestrooms, including 11 suites, that come with a private natural hot spring bath each.

The resort’s other highlights include a yoga deck surrounded by the natural landscape, providing guests a tranquil space to breathe, stretch and reconnect. The resort will also offer curated Alila Moments – signature experiences that allow guests to immerse themselves in Hakone’s traditions and culture beyond a conventional resort stay.

Situated within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Alila Sengokuhara Hakone is located in an area known for its seasonal beauty, art museums, volcanic terrain, and panoramic views towards Mount Kintoki.

The hotel is designed to blend into the natural surroundings, with Japanese firm Kengo Kuma and Associates appointed as the project’s architect.

As for dining, Alila Sengokuhara Hakone’s restaurant and bar will champion locally sourced, seasonal ingredients from nearby fields, forests and seas — aligning with the brand’s dedication to culinary experiences rooted in their setting. The menus will feature flavours of the region, connecting guests through its ingredients to Hakone and the broader Japanese landscape.

The resort will join a global portfolio of 19 existing Alila properties, including 13 across Asia. The brand’s introduction in Japan will bring Hyatt’s Japan portfolio to 10 brands.
